Are all novels mysteries? Discuss and learn the elements and techniques of a suspense novel, with specific focus on examples from crime fiction (mysteries and thrillers). The class will draw on examples of experts in the genre such as Lee Child, Jo Nesbo, and others, as well as from teaching artist James Tucker’s two novels, Next of Kin and The Holdouts. Students in the class will have time to practice writing a few paragraphs of the beginning of a scene using the elements and techniques discussed, and to share some of this writing with the class. There will also be time for general questions and discussions about writing and publication.
All are invited to attend a presentation by local author James Tucker, the author of the acclaimed Buddy Lock Thrillers, Next of Kin, and The Holdouts. Tucker is a graduate from the University of Minnesota Law School and one of four fiction writers awarded a position at a past Mentor Series at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis.
