A.I.

Too much is said about this technology. Yes, it can write books that aren’t as good as books written by talented authors. I asked it to write a page in my “style”. The results were terrible. I asked it to write a page in the style of Tolstoy, and then Austen. The results were a pastiche of these authors but unmistakably poorly done and NOT their work.

But the thing that most articles miss about A.I. writing novels is that a human doesn’t have the experience of writing a novel. It’s as if Tom Brady played quarterback in a video game but not in real life. How much poorer an experience would that have been FOR HIM?

For writers, the adrenaline of finding the right word, the perfect plot point, the character who appears from nowhere, the opportunity, as Hemingway said, to write better than we can–it is for this rush that we live.

I will never use A.I. to write a novel. What would be the point?
