9.28.26 Bios

Like some (many?), I’m looking forward to reading Tracy Daugherty’s biography of Cormac McCarthy and Hermione Lee’s biography of Anita Brookner, both to be published in the next month. While McCarthy and Brookner couldn’t have been different—and might have disliked each other’s books and sensibility—both were committed to their art.  Brookner is cut-glass, polish, sentences sharp as razors.  McCarthy is language devoid of ornamentation but stronger for it.  In addition to story, some pleasure in reading these two is being in their minds, in their sensibilities, which can lead to new ways of seeing.
